For the last several weeks in our ongoing series through the Gospel of Matthew, we have following Jesus through the crucial events of the last hours before His crucifixion. We have seen His Passover meal, watched as he prayed in the garden, and gasped with horror as our Lord was betrayed with a kiss, arrested, drug off to the high priest, and subjected to a sick joke of an unjust trial. Now our Lord will be disowned and condemned.
We are following Jesus through the events of that crucial last week, and now last day, just hours really, before His crucifixion. We have slowed down to carefully consider everything that Matthew tells us about Jesus during these crucial last hours.
We continue our slow walk through the crucial events of Passion Week. Jesus has just finished praying in the Garden of Gethsemane and Judas has arrived.
Jesus was Hypocritically Betrayed with a Kiss, Unjustly Arrested Without Resistance, and Painfully Deserted to Fulfill God’s Word.
We have reached not just that crucial last week that we often call “Holy Week” or “Passion Week,” but we’ve also reached that last crucial day. That last 24 hours before the crucifixion of our Lord. Jesus is emphasizing the immediacy of the events soon to come. What does this mean for us? We need to Recognize Our Weakness and Marvel at Jesus’ Strength.
For over two years now, we’ve been following Jesus through the Gospel of Matthew, and we’ve now followed Him right up into that crucial, holy, last week. Today, we enter into that critical final 24 hours leading up to the crucifixion.
Turning the corner into the next section of Matthew, we turn back into the crucial events of Passion Week. In today’s passage, a women does a beautiful thing to Jesus.
