Lanse Evangelical Free Church
From the Pastor
Dear Church Family,
It’s Holy Spirit Sunday!
Historically, Christians have marked off this day each year to celebrate the arrival of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost (Acts 2). The Holy Spirit, Who is God Himself, is also the Personal gift of God’s empowering presence within all of His children. His ministries to us are awesome, multiple, and manifold.
Right before He went to the Cross, the Lord Jesus said, “I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever–the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.” (John 14:16-17). Because He is in us, we have so much to be thankful for!
I can’t believe we’ve finally reached the last Sunday morning of offering 3 worship services due to the pandemic. I’m eager for us all to get closer together, but I also admit that I’ll probably miss singing all of the songs three times and getting to preach three times every Sunday morning, often outside at 11:00am! At the same time, I’m looking forward to discovering the new adventures the Lord has prepared for us (Ephesians 2:10).
Our EFCA Statement of faith declares that “the Holy Spirit, in all that He does, glorifies the Lord Jesus Christ.” Let’s be sure to join Him! Whether at home or on campus on this “Holy Spirit Sunday,” let’s make sure that every single person in this beloved church family brings glory to the Lord Jesus Christ.
In His Grip,
– Pastor Matt
P.S. The Bible closely relates being filled with the Holy Spirit to singing (Ephesians 5:19). As we come under His influence, we are led to worship with joy. “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God” (Colossians 3:16).
Home Worship Guide
1. Welcome to Worship & Worship in Bible Memory
Begin your family’s time of worship by reciting Psalm 100 together:
“Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth.
Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs.
Know that the LORD is God. It is he who made us, and we are his;
we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise;
give thanks to him and praise his name.
For the LORD is good and his love endures forever;
his faithfulness continues through all generations.
Have someone pray and ask God to bless your time of worship at home.
2. Worship in Singing
As a household sing “The Comforter Has Come” by Frank Bottome.
**Option. Those worshiping on campus are also singing, “Breathe On Me, Breath of God,” “I Saw the Light,” “Holy Spirit, and “Wonderful, Merciful Savior.” You could add or substitute those songs for your household, as well.
3. Worship in Unity
Recite together Article 6 of the EFCA Statement of Faith.
“We believe that the Holy Spirit, in all that He does, glorifies the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of its guilt. He regenerates sinners, and in Him they are baptized into union with Christ and adopted as heirs in the family of God. He also indwells, illuminates, guides, equips and empowers believers for Christ-like living and service.”
4. Worship in Thanksgiving and Lament
“Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn” (Romans 12:15).
Share with your family those things you are celebrating and those things you are lamenting this week.
5. Worship in Prayer
Take prayer requests and pray for each other.
Read the prayer guide together and pray for the rest of the church family and the requests listed.
6. Worship in Scripture Reading
Have someone read Psalm 115 to prepare to listen to today’s message.
7. Worship in the Word
Watch or read Pastor Matt’s message, “Not To Us, O LORD.”
[The message will be available online by Sunday morning.]
Some families may want to watch/read the message on their own and then have a Bible study and discussion together during this time.
8. Worship in Singing
Sing “Spirit of the Living God” by Daniel Iverson.
9. Worship All Week
Have someone pray a prayer of commissioning for your family as you end this time of gathered worship and face a week of new opportunities and new challenges to serve the Lord, the church, and the world in His Name.
